Professor Khudiram Das received a lot of awards, medal and ovations in his life time. His major achievements includes Calcutta University Gold Medal, 5 endowment Gold Medals and Sir Ashutosh Silver Medal for standing First in Class 1st in M.A Bengali with record marks (72.6%) in 1939. He took an active part in the national movements during 1940-1945 and founded many schools and colleges. He was awarded with Pranatosh Ghatak Smriti Puraskar in 1973, Vidyasagar Smriti Puraskar of West Bengal Govt in 1984, Sarojini Basu Gold Medal by C.U. and Sahitya Ratna title by Howrah Pandit Samaj in 1987, Rabindra Tattwacharya title by Tagore Research Institute in 1992, Rabindra Smriti Puraskar of West Bengal Govt in 1994 , Narayan Gangapadhya Smarak Puraskar by C.U. in 1995 and Rabitirthankar title by Sanskrit College in 1998.

He won the D. Litt. Degree of Calcutta University in 1962 which was the first Doctor of Literature awarded in Bengali Literature. He had a long fulfilling career and worked in quite a few renowned colleges and universities. He worked at Calcutta University as Ramtanu Lahiri Professor of Bengali & Head of the Department of Modern Indian Languages from 1973-1981.

This dictionary was planned in 1981, just after my retirement from Calcutta University Service, but actually undertaken in 1982 and completed in 1994. Originally it was though that the dictionary would not only be linguistic in character but would also provide synonymous words and expressions of important modern Indian languages, at least the languages of the eastern zone of the country, including Hindi. But as ill luck would have it, funds for the execution of such an ambitious plan were not available and I had to remain content with only the linguistic aspect of the work. Still such a novel project in Bengali language needed some financial assistance which was, however, readily available at the behest of the then Education Minister of West Bengal, the late Shambhu Charan Ghosh. His able secretaries, Sri G.S. Banerji and Sri Ranajit Chaudhuri connected the project with the activity of the West Bengal State Book Board and provided accommodation for its office in the Presidency College where I had been a teacher in my early days. My work of compilation started with the assistance of two workers whose number was raised in course of time. Sri Phani Bhusan Mukherji, retired Professor of English, Presidency college and a friend of mine kindly looked over the English equivalents of the Bengali words and phrases. In early 1992, however, the State Book Board authorities expressed their inability to provide any more assistance for the project. By then, however, the major portion of the work was almost completed and the final revision for the press copy remained to be done. I would like to add a few words for the users of this book of reference, perhaps a novel venture in the field of Bengali language. The body of the dictionary contains firstly the basic Bengali words in Bengali script. It is followed by a transliteration of the words in Roman script with necessary diacritical marks. After this the most important part of the work begins with the third bracket '[' sign. In the first place within it is to be found the pronunciation of the particular word in simple phonetic symbols. In the second part within the bracketed space are given the source and etymology of the word including its derivation and the part of speech in which it is currently used; these are, however, given in Roman Script only. Here the consultants will find much to their surprise that the vocabulary of our language contains a much larger number of non-Aryan words, suffixes and help-words than was previously thought of. This category of words is mostly of Kol-Munda origin, here described as Santhali, the present and major descendant of the family. In a rough count the present day written Bengali or even Standard Colloquial Bengali contains about eighty percent of words of Sanskrit origin, of which more or less twenty-five percent are from pure Sanskrit (Tatsama) about fifty percent are words derived from Sanskrit undergoing changes through centuries of use (Tadbhava) and the remaining five or six percent are present day loan-words from Sanskrit modified through our habit of pronouncing them (Semi-tatsama). Of the rest twenty per cent about fifteen are from native non-Aryan source, mostly Kol-Munda noted as Santhali here together with a few words of Dravidian or Tibeto-Burman origin. As for the remaining five, they are foreign i.e. extra-Indian elements naturalised in our tongue, comprising Persian, Arabic or rather, Arabic through Persian, Portuguese, English etc. and then just a few loan-words from the neighbouring Indian languages, mainly Hindi. It is to be noted that the dialects spoken by the common village people show much less use of proper Sanskrit words and more use of the Tadbhava and the Non-Aryan. After the linguistic features described with brackets comes the English counterpart of the basic Bengali word and its synonyms in Bengali. The treatment of the basic word is followed by its use in phrases or idioms or idioms or idiomatic expressions and in special senses, if any. A Casual observer will not, however, fail to notice that in the matter of choice of words for this lexicon. I preferred to lay more stress on common words of everyday use in the standard colloquial speech and avoided as far as practicable the pedantic words of Sanskrit which have by now fallen from use, but have been enlisted by our conventional lexicographers. In fine, I invite suggestions from the learned readers and consultants of this dictionary ; whose opinions will be carefully considered during preparation of the second edition of the book.

N.B: Above note are the words of Professor Khudiram Das as per the preface of unpublished Dictionary. When the project was going on in full swing, a powerful lobby tried to include their name in the project. This was not accepted by Professor Das and as a result even after finishing all the work this unique and exemplary work remains unpublished even after 2 decades.

Today, renowned litterateur, ,linguist , Scholar and authority on Rabindranath Tagore,Dr. Khudiram Das is almost nearing the end of his 80th year of age, yet he is a tenacious, untiring and productive devotee of literature. It remains a mystery how he gets the requisite zeal like that of a young enthusiast, to create such diverse literary work. Apart from his other works, he has gifted the nation some valuable book on Rabindranath Tagore. Excerpts from the letter to Professor Khudiram Das from Prabodh Chandra Sen dated 18th Of November 1978:

“Your editing of Chandimangal deserves to be remembered as a noble deed. You have shouldered the immense moral obligation towards the greatest poet of Bengal, on behalf of the nation. Finally the national duty towards the great poet is accomplished. The nation is showering you with admiration, yet sadly the whole work had to be done single handedly by your individual endeavour. It should have been sponsored and executed with the monetary contribution of the Government or any establishment. It didn’t happen that way, that’s the sad and unfortunate part. However, that makes your contribution even more stellar. Thus personally I congratulate you on your solitary expedition. For achieving the insurmountable work the posterity will be ever grateful - you will blessed by the county. Had I received the book earlier, it would have been of great help– very useful. I hope still it would be useful for me.”

Calcutta University’s Emeritus Ramtanu Lahiri Professor, Dr. Das has achieved remarkable fame by writing series of books from various perspectives on Rabindranath Tagore. This book on Rabindranath is his fourth of the series and is quite extraordinary. He quotes poetry by Rabindranath Tagore and one by one elucidates how it connects with nuclear science and modern science.
